Special gains lift Paxar earnings

Paxar Corp., the White Plains company that makes identification and tracking systems for the retail industry, earned $27.5 million, or 66 cents a share, during the third quarter, an improvement over the $4.1 million, or 10 cents a share, during last year’s third quarter, the company announced. But not counting special one-time charges and gains, the company earned $9.6 million, or 23 cents a share, this year. The comparable figure in 2005 was $9.9 million, or 24 cents a share. The gains included $39.4 million this year from the settlement of a patent lawsuit. Sales rose to $217.1 million from $200.6 million.
