Acorda Therapeutics, a biotech company based in Hawthorne, said yesterday that it will conduct an additional final-phase trial of a drug for people with multiple sclerosis.
The company said it decided to continue testing the drug, Fampridine-SR, based on feedback it received from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
In September, the company announced that a Phase 3 trial of the drug showed that a greater proportion of people who received the drug had improved walking speed over participants who were given a placebo.
The company is hoping the drug can help 320,000 Americans with multiple sclerosis who have trouble walking.
Acorda has been working on the development of the drug since the mid-1990s. That was when Acorda acquired the rights to the medication from Elan, a pharmaceutical company in Ireland.
