Starbucks to convert to zero trans fat

January
2

Starbucks announced today that it will prepare all its fresh bakery and lunch products with zero grams of trans fatty acids starting tomorrow in stores throughout Westchester, Putnam and Rockland counties as well as New York City.

The initiative also includes 10 other major cities nationwide. It comes in advance of New York City’s planned ban of artificial trans fats — a partially hydrogenated oil that increases the risk of heart disease and stroke, according to the New York City Board of health. Last month, the board voted unanimously to require all restaurants in the city to remove artificial trans fatty acids over the next 18 months. The proposal is expected to face a legal challenge.

In response to health concerns of consumers, some restaurants have voluntarily started making changes nationwide, including Taco Bell and KFC.
