NYSEG customers will receive an average refund of $45 in their electric bills this spring thanks to an August ruling by the state Public Service Commission.
NYSEG, formerly known as New York State Electric & Gas Corp., will refund its electric customers a total of $77 million in bill credits between March 1 and April 15, the Public Service Commission said today.
The Binghamton-based utility has about 850,000 electric customers in New York, including local customers in Rockland, Putnam and northern Westchester counties.
About 50 percent of the onetime credit will be given to the utility’s 750,000 residential customers.
The money for the refunds is coming from an account that holds money from NYSEG’s sale of its electric generating plants as well as profits from selling electricity.
The amount customer will receive will depend on their service class and annual energy consumption for the 12-month billing cycle ending in February.
If the amount of the refund is greater than the bill, NYSEG will credit the remainder in future bills.
In August, the commission also ordered an annual delivery rate decrease of $36.2 million starting this month.
