The Internal Revenue Service estimates that up to 11,000 Westchester County residents are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit, a provision in federal tax law that gives low- and moderate-income earners a credit of up to $6,100 if they earn $38,000 a year or less.
As annual tax season gets under way, the county is looking to spread the word about the tax credits and to provide residents with help in filling out forms to boost participation.
That’s why Thursday at noon, County Executive Andy Spano will hold a press conference at the County’s One Stop Employment Center at 143 Grand St. to restart a program that last year helped 719 low- and moderate-income residents get tax refunds of more than $3.2 million. The incorrect day was reported in an earlier posting of this item.
Last year’s amount works out to an average of $4,450 a person, Spano said.
This year, the county said, it’s hoping to do even better.
“The program is expanding every year, but we still need everyone’s help to get the word out, he said.
The White Plains center is one of four sites where the county will provide free assistance in filling out the tax forms. The others are in Yonkers, Mount Vernon and Peekskill.
Appointments are required. Those seeking the free tax help should call 866-914-EITC (3482) or 211 to make an appointment.
Tax help is available until April 14. Hours of operation at each location will vary to accommodate those most in need and include daytime hours as well as evenings and some weekends, the county said.
In addition to Spano’s press conference, the county is boosting awareness of EITC through brochures, bus posters, public-service announcements and its Web site (www.westchestergov.com/eitc), it said.
