Emisphere Technologies Inc. has formed a panel of six medical experts to review the company’s oral-insulin drug program with the goal of partnering with a large pharmaceutical company, the company announced today.
Such an alliance could help the struggling biopharmaceutical company bring the diabetes treatment to market.
Eastview-based Emisphere, which said earlier this month that it lacks the financial resources to continue operating past September, hopes to give its eligen oral-delivery technology “the scientific diligence it deserves, said Lewis H. Bender, Emisphere president and chief executive.
“We felt it was important … to reemphasize the important potential that an oral-insulin product could have on the treatment of diabetes,â€? Bender said during a Web cast this morning about the formation of the scientific advisory board.
Emisphere recognizes “the need to affiliate with a strong group of people to make the technology more attractive to a large pharmaceutical company.
The quality of the researchers lends credibility to the testing process, he said.
The panel is being led by Dr. Daniel J. Drucker, professor of medicine at the University of Toronto. Other members of the board include doctors with expertise in diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism from across the United States.
Emisphere hopes to improve upon its existing technology and advance the product into further clinical trials later this year, said Bender, who replaced Dr. Michael Goldberg in January after he was ousted by Emisphere’s board.
“It’s our goal to optimize the formulation, Drucker said.
