Nutrition 21 Inc. announced today that it will begin marketing another form of chromium, known as chromium histidinate, as a dietary supplement.
The Purchase-based company built its business selling chromium picolinate, a dietary supplement used by some diabetes patients to aid in controlling blood sugar levels.
Nutrition 21 said it obtained an exclusive license by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for pharmaceutical uses of chromium histidinate and one of two licenses granted for other uses of the compound.
The company has applied for patents for use of chromium histidinate as a dietary supplement, both alone and in combination with chromium picolinate.
Certain uses of chromium histidinate are also covered by patents already owned by the company for chromium, generally, Nutrition 21 said. The existing and applied-for patents cover all known nutritional uses of chromium histidinate as a dietary supplement, it said.
The company plans to incorporate the histidinate complex into some of its existing and future products, chief executive Paul Intlekofer said.
Shares of the company, traded on the Nasdaq, rose 25 cents today to $1.91 a share.
