Barr gets tentative drug approval

May
11

Barr Laboratories Inc., which has research operations in Pomona, has gotten tentative approval from regulators for its generic version of a drug that treats the kind of dementia Alzheimer’s patients get. The company said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ruled that the generic version of Janssen’s Pharmaceutica Products LP’s Razadyne meets the substantive requirements for approval. Barr cannot market the drug until Janssen’s right to be the exclusive marketer expires. Janssen and Synaptech, the patent owner, sued Barr in June 2005 to challenge Barr’s bid to market the drug. The trial is due to begin this month. The product had sales of $140 million for the year that ended in March. Barr Laboratories is a subsidiary of Woodcliff Lake, N.J.-based Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc.
