New phone directories are out

Area residents will see changes in the new Verizon telephone books arriving at their homes.
Idearc Media Corp., the publisher of the Verizon Yellow Pages, said that it has combined seven local yellow-page directories into two new directories for the Westchester North and South communities.

The decision to consolidate the yellow-page listings was based on a company study that considered the shopping patterns of area consumers, the company said. The two directories — Verizon Yellow Pages Northern Westchester and Putnam edition and the Verizon Yellow Pages Southern Westchester, Putnam and Greenwich edition — are currently being distributed to local residents.

“We were struck by the clear message from the research that people in the Westchester and Putnam communities shop within their surrounding neighborhoods, said John Wolfrum, general sales manager for Idearc. “We responded by combining several directories into a northern and southern layout, allowing the books to have the best match to consumer shopping preferences.

Based on Idearc’s research, consumers who live in Northern Westchester and Putnam shopped 7.5 out of 10 times on average within those areas, and consumers from Southern Westchester predominantly shopped in their own neighborhoods 90 percent of the time. Advertisers in the yellow pages can advertise in one or both editions, depending on the consumers and markets they are trying to reach.

In addition to the consolidated yellow page listings, the directories include the standard white-page listings for homes and businesses in all of Westchester and Putnam. That is the same as directories in previous years. The directories also feature coupons from local businesses and a restaurant guide with an A-Z index, menus and maps.

Idearc became an independent company in November when Verizon, the dominant local phone company in New York and the Northeast, spun off its yellow pages business. The Dallas-based company currently provides services for more than 1,200 directories in 35 states.
