IBM releases Power6 chip

Armonk-based IBM Corp. has updated its Power family of microchips with a new version, the Power6, which runs at 4.7 GHz. The chip is being introduced in IBM’s System p 570 Unix server for businesses. IBM said the chip is the fastest microprocessor to date, and also has breakthroughs in energy conservation. The chip is twice as fast as the Power5, IBM said, while still using nearly the same amount of electricity.
