Business Council of Westchester goes blogging

When the subject of sharing innovative business ideas came up at a meeting of the Business Council of Westchester several months ago, businesswoman Nancy A. Shenker made a fateful suggestion.
“If we’re talking about innovation, why use traditional media? she recalled asking. The discussion led to the recent launch of Innovation Station, the council’s first blog, at www.bcwinnovationstation.typepad.com.
Suggesting the idea, of course, led to Shenker becoming the editor of the service. When not overseeing the site, she’s overseeing her marketing business, ONswitch, based in Thornwood.
Shenker, 51, said she didn’t grow up with technology and found she had to school herself, but she also has discovered many convenient tools for communicating with others.
Some businesspeople may find a blog intimidating, she said.
“To some extent, they’re a little bit afraid of it because it’s very immediate, very public, Shenker said. “The blogosphere has its own etiquette, I think. You have to learn ground rules. The artful blogger in the business world will use it without being aggressively salesy.
The blog already has the Business Council exploring different ways of doing things. Rather than e-mail a survey to members requesting their thoughts on how best to run an upcoming event, the group recently posted a request on the blog for ideas.
Hillary Millman, director of communications for the council, said many council members haven’t used blogs before. The organization has been demonstrating the new site at recent meetings.
“Most people have heard of a blog. They weren’t really familiar with how to do it, or how to use it to benefit their business, she said.

Speaking of scary blogging…now all of Westchester knows my age!
No problem. I blog about some of the advantages of aging in my “non-business” blog HippytoWiki http://theonswitch.typepad.com/hippytowiki/
(By the way, the name of my company is theONswitch.)
