Cablevision prevails in FCC ruling on deregulation

June
26

Cablevision of Rockland/Ramapo Inc., has prevailed in its petition filed with the Federal Communications Commission to have basic-cable service rates deregulated in Montvale, N.J., according to a decision released today by the regulatory agency.

The FCC agreed with the West Nyack-based unit of Cablevision Systems Corp., which also provides service to several communities in Rockland County, that satellite providers, such as DirectTV Inc. and DISH Network, provided â€Å“effective competitionâ€? in Montvale and revoked the authority of the local-franchising authorities in those communities to regulate basic-cable rates.

The decision also applies to two other Cablevision units that provide cable services to Elizabeth and West Milford, N.J.

    On a side note:

I remember reading somewhere that Cable providers ( Cablevision included ) would be required to allow
subscribers to bring there own box.

    Is this true?
    Can someone provide more detail?
