Canadians will get access to Seasonale, Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc.’s extended-cycle oral contraceptive, the WoodCliff Lake, N.J., drugmaker said today.
Barr, which has major operations in Rockland County, said a partner of its subsidiary, Duramed Pharmaceuticals, has obtained approval from the Therapeutic Products Directorate of Health Canada to market Seasonale tablets in Canada. This will be the first extended-cycle oral contraceptive available in Canada.
Seasonale was introduced in the United States in 2003 by Duramed.
Duramed and Paladin signed a license and distribution deal in October 2005 that granted Paladin an exclusive license to market the contraceptive in Canada. Duramed will manufacture Seasonale. Paladin plans to introduce the drug in Canada in the final three months of this year.
Women on the Seasonale extended regimen take tablets for 84 consecutive days, followed by seven days of a placebo, reducing the number of menstrual cycles from 13 a year to four.
