Supervisor hopeful to start ‘Buy Yorktown’ campaign

October

Don Peters, owner of the Sports Barn in Yorktown Heights and a Democratic candidate for Yorktown supervisor, is planning to introduce a ‘Buy Yorktown’ campaign to encourage residents to support their town’s small businesses. He said he will work with the Yorktown Chamber of Commerce, businesses, local media and surrounding communities to organize a conference to discuss small-business concerns and solutions. In addition, plans to set up a committee of officials from the public and private sector.

“Yorktown’s economy is largely driven by small businesses that are creating jobs and providing valuable goods and services, yet many are burdened by increasing taxes and bureaucracy,â€? Peters said in a statement. “As a small-business owner myself, I feel their pain. …â€?
Peters’ campaign media director, Gunther Beyer, said Peters got the idea after dining at a local restaurant and noticing, on the menu, that a lot of the produce came from local farms.

“He said, ‘What a good idea,’ Beyer said. “He’s approached a lot of other businees people since, and they all favor the idea and want to get behind it.

Beyer said the campaign won’t involve taxpayer money.
