IBM at top of energy efficiency rankings

November
21

Supercomputers manufactured by IBM Corp. are the most energy efficient in the world, according to an industry ranking.

IBM’s Blue Gene supercomputers took 26 of the top 27 spots in the the inaugural Green500 list. The energy efficiency rankings are compiled by Kirk Cameron and Wu Feng, two computer science professors at Virginia Tech University. Armonk-based IBM said that its supercomputers also led another study that ranked the world’s most powerful supercomputers.

A variety of companies and scientists are using IBM Blue Gene supercomputers to improve their research capabilities in fields such as financial modeling, chemistry, astronomy, space research and climate modeling.

“As this list is the first attempt of its kind, the rankings are open to interpretation by the media, associated vendors, and the general community, Cameron said in a written statement. “The Green500 team encourages fair use of the list rankings to promote energy efficiency in high-performance systems.
