FDA needs more time to review pain medication

Progenics Pharmaceuticals Inc., an Eastview-based biotechnology research company, and Wyeth said this morning the U.S. Food and Drug Administration needs an extra three months to review their application to market a drug to treat constipation caused by certain pain medications.
The government agency now needs until April 30 to review the application for subcutaneous methylnaltrexone, the companies said in a joint release.
The companies are developing the drug for terminally patients with conditions such as cancer or AIDS and who have taken opiods to relieve pain.
