Westchester named “intelligent” community

Westchester County has been named one of the Top Seven Intelligent Communities of the Year in recognition of its programs to use information technnology to attract businesses, create jobs and generate economic growth.
The list of communities also includes Dundee, Scotland; Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada; Gangnam District, Seoul, South Korea; Northeast Ohio; Tallinn, Estonia; and Winston-Salem, N.C. The list was compiled by the Intelligent Community Forum, a non-profit international think tank.
“This just reinforces what we’ve known all along – that we are at the forefront when it comes to technology, education and economic development,â€? County Executive Andrew Spano said in a written statement. “For years, we’ve had some of the most innovative policies and programs, as well as one of the best telecommunications infrastructures in the U.S.â€?  Â
The Intelligent Community Forum said that a key accomplishment for Westchester was building a fiber network that now serves over 3,500 companies. The 800-mile fiber optic network, operated by Cablevision’s Lightpath, also links local governments, libraries, hospitals and schools.Westchester also was recognized for programs to improve the skills of the work force, including a growing immigrant population.
On May 16, one of the top seven communities will be named 2008’s Intelligent Community of the Year during the group’s annual summit in New York City.Â
