Barr wants to market prostate drug

Barr Laboratories Inc. of Pomona is challenging patents listed by rival GlaxoSmithKline for Avodart, a drug for the treatment of the prostate. Barr filed an application with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration last October for the right to market the generic version of Avodart in .5-milligram capsules. But on Monday, GlaxoSmithKline filed a lawsuit in federal court in Delaware to prevent Barr from selling the drug, Barr said. The drug had U.S. sales of $362 million last year, Barr said, citing industry data.
