Residents of Clarkstown and Greenburgh can congratulate themselves on choosing one of the nicest towns in the country for their home. Both ranked in the top 100 in Money magazine’s list of “America’s Best Small Cities.” Clarkstown was No. 71 and Greenburgh came in at No. 80.
The magazine cited Clarkstown’s proximity to New York City and the Hudson Valley.
“The affluent and diverse town boasts high quality schools and a wealth of libraries and community parks. Real estate is far from cheap, but a robust police force keeps Clarkstown ranked near the top of the safest cities in the country,” the magazine said.
The median income in the town is $115,191, well above the list’s average of $93,075. But the purchasing power of a family was just $70,410, taking into account the cost of living in the area, compared to $84,780 on average. The median home price of $455,630 was well above the average of $291,949. And job growth between 2000 and 2007 was just 3.21 percent, compared to 18.72 percent on average in the survey.
Greenburgh’s diverse population and compelling arts community won raves from Money.
“If you want to know what makes Greenburgh special, look no further than town hall. The city’s remarkably open government (the town supervisor makes house calls to settle grievances) mirrors a community light-years away from the parts of New York state that appear on primetime crime dramas,” the magazine said.
The median income in the town is $122,105 with a purchasing power of $66,434. The median home price was $608,250. Job growth between 2000 and 2007 was 5.56 percent.
