EpiCept Corp., a pharmaceutical company at The Landmark in Eastview, said it is partnering with GNI Ltd. to develop a new drug to treat late-stage viral infection-induced hepatitis.

GNI is a biopharmaceutical company with headquarters in Japan and major operations in China. The companies will develop the drug in Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Shanghai Genomics, a unit of GNI, will start to prepare for development in China.

EpiCept is earning an upfront license fee and will be eligible for milestone payments and royalties on commercial sales in return for granting GNI a license to develop the drug, known as EP1013. EP1013 was discovered by EpiCept scientists and is covered by patents in the United States, China and other markets.

More than 20 million people in China are affected by hepatitis B virus infection, EpiCept said.
