Web site looks to help couples save marriages

October

For America’s lawyers, divorces are a $28 billion industry.

The big yearly legal fees reflect a society in which nearly half of all first-time marriages end in divorce.

While the husband and wife attorneys Willem and Margaretha Gravett have certainly handled their share of divorce cases at the law firm of Gravett & Gravett, they recently launched a Web site to aid couples looking to save failing marriages.

The law firm has offices in Mount Kisco and White Plains.

“People often assume that as divorce attorneys, we encourage divorce,” said Willem Gravett, founding partner of the law firm. “That is not true…This Web site is designed to help couples to buck the trend and to take the necessary steps to try and avoid divorce.”

The free site, www.newyorkmarriagehelp.com, includes informational articles, links to additional online resources and a database of Westchester County marriage and family counselors. The site covers issues such as how to cope when a spouse refuses to go to counseling and how to communicate better in a marriage. There also are links to online resources that offer advice on dealing with an unfaithful spouse, sustaining a healthy marriage and remembering children’s needs in a troubled household.

“Not only is divorce expensive, it can also be emotionally devastating,” said Margaretha Gravett, founding partner of Gravett & Gravett. “It is certainly not the easy solution some people think it is. We wanted to offer local experts and resources to the community to help couples that are committed to resolving their differences and making their marriage work.”
