Stores fined by Cuomo

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has fined two discount stores in Westchester County for allegedly selling electrical extension cords that failed to meet minimum safety requirements.

The stores, 99 Cent USA in Mohegan Lake and Midland 99 & UP in Port Chester, have agreed to stop the sales of the dangerous products, notify their suppliers that they no longer will buy such products and pay penalties to the state, according to Cuomo’s office.

In addition to the faulty extension cords, 99 Cent USA also was selling children’s jewelry that contained unsafe levels of lead, which can be toxic to young children, Cuomo’s office said.

“New Yorkers deserve to know that the products they purchase are safe,” Cuomo said in a written statement. “This agreement will keep dangerous products out of Westchester stores and out of the homes of area consumers.”

Extension cords not meeting safety standards can cause fires or electrical shocks to consumers.
Management at the stores could not be reached for comment.
