Julie Moran AlterioJulie Moran Alterio, her husband and baby girl "Pumpkin" share their Northern Westchester home with three iPods and more colorful plastic toys than seems necessary to entertain one tiny human. Since becoming a first-time mom to a preemie in 2005, Julie has been juggling work and parenting and has finally accepted that there is no way anyone could possibly find all of the Cheerios scattered around her house. Julie, a senior business reporter, explores the intersection of technology, commerce and culture. Before she joined The Journal News in 1999, Julie was business editor at The Stamford Advocate and Greenwich Time in Connecticut. A graduate of SUNY at Buffalo, Julie studied English literature in between days and nights at the student magazine.

IBM to buy back $15 billion in stock

The board of directors of Armonk-based IBM Corp. today authorized an additional $15 billion to buy back shares of the company’s stock. Barr wins patent for contraceptive

Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc. has received a U.S. patent for its Seasonique extended-cycle oral contraceptive that will expire in January 2024. The company received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for Seasonique in May 2006. The drug followed Barr’s 2003 introduction of Seasonale, another oral contraceptive intended to extend a woman’s cycle.

Verizon adds more FiOS communities

Verizon is expanding its FiOS TV service to Briarcliff Manor, Sleepy Hollow and the town and village of Ossining. Consumers in those towns can now place orders for the service, which is available in more than 145 New York communities. IBM and SAP developing first software product
