Survey provides picture of Westchester businesses

A recently released survey of its membership by The Business Council of Westchester portrays entrepreneurs who are focused on growing their business, and growing it locally.

Universal American Corp. of Rye Brook said this week that its acquisition of MemberHealth Inc. of Cleveland would boost 2008 earnings by 4 to 7 percent, below the 13-15 percent range that the company predicted last spring.

TAL International’s profits fall

TAL International Group Inc. of Purchase, a lessor of freight containers and chassis, said yesterday that it had lower fourth-quarter profits on higher revenues.

The company reported net income of $3.4 million, or 10 cents a share, on revenue of $91.4 million. For the comparable quarter a year earlier, it had net income of $14.9 million. [...]

Presidential Life’s profits rise

Presidential Life Corp. of Nyack reported lower fourth-quarter profits but higher profits for the year.

The company had net income last quarter of $4 million, or 14 cents a share. For the comparable quarter a year earlier, it had net income of $7.93 million, or 27 cents a share.

USI Holdings closes on acquistion

USI Holdings Corp. of Briarcliff Manor said yesterday it has closed on its acquisition of Corporate Planning Systems, an employee benefit insurance brokerage firm based in Bellevue, Wash. Terms were not disclosed. CPS is expected to contribute about $4.5 million in revenues to USI annually, the company said.

MVC Capital Inc. of Purchase said it made a follow-on investment in Summit Research Labs Inc. in Huguenot, N.Y. Terms were not disclosed.
