Tech job market in Westchester declines at lower rate

Job openings for technology workers continued to weaken in Westchester County during the second quarter, although hiring conditions have improved since the start of the year, according to a report.

The Pace/SkillPROOF IT Index, which tracks the regional employment outlook for technology jobs, fell from 45 to 41 in Westchester.

The 8.9 percent drop in the index was an improvement from the first three months of the year when the index fell 30 percent. While the weakening economy hurts companies that sell everything from software to computers, some analysts have said a recent rally in technology stocks may indicate that the outlook is improving.

Manhattan showed a slight increase in tech job listings during the second quarter.

The report’s researchers said it is too early to conclude from the improved data that the slump in tech jobs of recent quarters is over. But they added added that the recent stablization is “significant in its implications.”

In Westchester, computer support specialists was the job category with the best hiring prospects, followed information technology managers and data base administrators. The weakest job category was software engineers (applications).

The index is a joint project of Pace University and SkillPROOF Inc., a Bridgeport, Conn., technology firm specializing in job market research.

Job skills workshop set in White Plains Thursday

Westchester County will host a free workshop, “Developing Job Skills in Hard Times: Alternative Ways to Career Success,” Thursday, April 30 at 4:30 p.m. at the YWCA of White Plains and Northern Westchester, 515 North St., White Plains.
Employment experts will discuss such topics as volunteer work that can lead to a paying job, opting for a vocational trade, and opening your own business. The Westchester County One Stop Employment Center, BOCES, the Women’s Enterprise Development Center and JobStar at Westchester Community College will provide speakers.

Playland job fair is Saturday

Westchester County will sponsor a job fair on Saturday for people seeking seasonal work at Playland in Rye. Applications will be accepted and interviews will be conducted for ride operators and cashiers; ride operators must be at least 18, and cashiers at least 16. The job fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Westchester County Center in White Plains. Interviews will be given only to the first 300 people to apply. Playland’s seasonal employment runs from May through September.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to host jobs event

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Westchester/Hudson Valley Chapter will host its second “Pink Slip Party” for job hunters in the financial and professional services fields on Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event wll be held at Vintage Bar & Restaurant, 171 Main Street, White Plains.

The event is designed as a forum where job seekers can network with recruiters in the region. Sixteen recruiters from the New York metropolitan area and career coaches are expected to attend.

WCC to host diversity job fair for adjunct faculty

Westchester Community College will hold a Diversity Job Fair for Adjunct Faculty on Wednesday, March 25 from 4:30-7:00 p.m. The free event will be held in the Harold L. Drimmer Library on the college campus at 75 Grasslands Road in Valhalla. Registration is at www.sunywcc.edu/jobs.
The fair will provide an opportunity to learn about current faculty openings for the summer and fall, and to learn about minority adjunct fellowships. Attendees can meet faculty, students, and administrators, tour the campus, and share their resume with Human Resources representatives at the event.

GoodTemps wins Westchester contract

About 50 workers with disabilities are expected to be hired for jobs at Westchester County government offices as a result of a new contract between the county and GoodTemps, a temporary staffing agency.

GoodTemps, a division of Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey Inc., said that the job opportunities for workers with disabilities include short-term and long-term temporary positions.

GoodTemps, which operates offices in New York and New Jersey, is one of the largest privately held temporary services agencies in the region. It has placed about 600 people with disabilities in jobs in the metro area.

“The GoodTemps contract is significant because it marks Goodwill’s first foray into Westchester County,” said David Schoch, senior vice president of GoodTemps. “We’re very proud to have been chosen for the assignment.”

The county contract makes GoodTemps the exclusive provider of temporary staffing services to Westchester County agencies. The contract was awarded through the New York State Industries for the Disabled.

IRS looking to hire revenue officers

The Internal Revenue Service said that it is is looking to fill hundreds of openings nationally for revenue officers. That includes openings at IRS offices in New York City and White Plains. The job of revenue officers includes collecting delinquent taxes and delinquent tax returns.

Starting salary, which varies by geographic area based on the cost of living, ranges from $38,177 to $44,976. Applicants must apply by Friday. Financial services agency to host job event

Pace report shows dramatic drop in IT jobs

A new report by Pace University shows the job market in the region for jobs in the information technology, or IT, sector shrunk dramatically during the third quarter, with few exceptions.

The decline was most pronounced in Westchester, Pace said, where the IT job market had its worst quarterly slide since Pace created its IT job index three years ago.

The Pace/SkillPROOF IT Job Index dropped more than 100 points during the third quarter, in contrast to the strong growth of over 40 points reported last quarter.

In Westchester, of the 11 job categories, only Network Systems and Data Communications Analysts exhibited growth with a slight upturn near the end of the quarter, said Pace, which has campuses in Pleasantville, White Plains and New York City.

The IT job market in Manhattan was better, Pace said, falling just 30 points.
