Excess space leads to new gym in Pearl River

March
14

What do you do with extra office space? Turn it into a gym. At least that’s what the principals of U.S. Information Systems Inc. have done.

Having moved the 20-year-old communications company to larger offices in Pearl River from Nyack last year, the Lagana family was unsure what to do with extra space they had at the 92,000-square-foot building on West Jefferson Avenue.

Co-owner and business manager Robert Lagana had the idea to open a gym, and Vision Fitness was born.

The 32,000-square-foot club features 200 cardio and stength machines, weight machines, free weights and stretching apparatuses.

In addition, the gym also has a five-lane sprinting track, an artificial turf field, group exercise rooms and classes and a large screen cinema that allows customers to watch movies while working out on treadmills, cycles and elipitical machines.

Vision Fitness also boasts a Youth Fit Zone with equipment geared to children 8 to 15 years old, such as cycle machines with video games and Dance Dance Revolution, a popular youth fitness game.

To learn more about the gym, go to www.visionfitnessny.com.

Rocklanders’ Web site sells U.S.-made goods

December
24

In response to recalls of foreign-made products and the decline of U.S. manufacturing, a trio of Rocklanders have established a Web site called America’s Business to Consumers (www.usab2c.com) that features only U.S.-made goods.

Offerings run the gamut from apparel to Zippo lighters — “from A to Z, according to one of the site’s founders, George Hanos, who retired from drug-maker Pfizer Inc. in 2004.

Hanos, 54, along with two sisters-in-law, Denetra Anayannis of Pomona and Nanuet-resident Sophia Anayannis, who edits a community blog and chat room on the site, wanted to make a difference.

“We asked ourselves, ‘What could one person really do … to stop the flow of knowledgeable jobs overseas?’â€? Hanos said.

Many of the manufacturers featured on the site are mom-and-pop operations, he said.

USAB2C.com acts as a portal Web site, having products shipped directly to consumers from the manufacturers.

Items include wooden toys from Maple Landmark Inc., based in Middlebury, Vt., and Holgate Toys of Bradford, Pa., which have none of lead-paint concerns of toys made in China, Hanos said.

The site has been up-and-running since the beginning of November in anticipation of the Christmas selling season, he said.

How’d sales do?

“For a start-up, Hanos said. “it worked out pretty good.

1800mattress.com opens in Mount Kisco

October
3

1800mattress.com has opened a Mount Kisco showroom as part of its plan to expand in Westchester County following the bankruptcy and closure of Rockaway Bedding this summer. The store, at 383 Bedford Road, is the fifth in Westchester.

The chain, based in Long Island City, is also looking a several locations for future stores, said John O’Connell, senior vice president of merchandising and retail.

“We have a terrific market share in Westchester … so we feel very strongly about Westchester County,â€? he said. “We’re not going to blanket the area with a lot of showrooms, but we’re going to make sure they’re in the right places. … Because we do business three ways, we strategically place stores where the customers most need it based on the data we receive from the phone business and the Internet.â€?

The Mount Kisco store has a new design with the atmosphere of a bedroom.

“You’ll have a very intimate setting, very soft,â€? O’Connell said, mentioning decorative curtains and other bedroom decor. “We’ve kind of forgone the basic visual appearance of a retail shop. …â€?
Other Westchester locations are in Mamaroneck, Scarsdale, Ossining and Jefferson Valley.
